لما جاء الإسلام ألقى على العرب مسؤولية حمل الرسالة ومسؤولية تبليغها للإمم الأخرى. فكان العرب مبشرين ومبشرين. هذا يعني كونهم عربا قد رتب عليهم مسؤولية لا ينهض بها سواهم. الوحي نزل بلسانهم وعليهم نقل هذه الرسالة وفق قواعد لسانهم للأمم الأخرى التي بها ألسنتها المختلفة والخاصة بها.
أمام هذا التحدي نهض رجل من بني كنانة نيابة عن العرب جميعا، فاستقرأ لغتهم، واستنبط ضوابطا لها، فحمى الإسلام بأن رسم نحو العربية، هذا الرجل هو أبو الأسود الدؤلي رأس المدرسة البصرية وأبوها. وليس هذا كل ما فعله أبو الأسود بل إنه رسم علامات الإعراب.
وعلى خطى أبي الأسود يخطو نصر بن عاصم الليثي الكناني فيعطي رسم الحرف العربي شكله النهائي وذلك بتنقيط الحروف لتمييزها، فسهل قراءة الحروف وأزال اللبس.
ورجل ثالث ومن قبيلة كنانة أيضا وهو الليث الجندعي الليثي قيل أنه أتم كتاب العين المنسوب للفراهيدي، وقيل أنه هو واضعه.
هل هي محض صدفة أن يكون هؤلاء الرجال من قبيلة كنانة وأن يكونوا غيارى سابقين في الذود عن العرب وحفظهم بحفظ لغتهم؟ إن قبيلة هذا شأنها، يحمل رجالها العبء عن كل العرب، إضافة لشرفها في مضر - حق لها أن يحفظ تراثها ولو بمختصر.
