كان المنصور آخر الملوك المقاتلين بحماة، وأول المهتمين بالعلم منهم، وفي بلاطه الذي كان أشبه بمنتدى علمي ظهر كتاب المضمار الذي يمتاز بتفاصيل تعطينا فكرة نادرة عن الواقع الحقيقي لعصره، من خلال ثلاث مواضيع: أولها الخلافة العباسية، وما كان يجري في قصورها، فقد أورد نصوص مراسلات الخليفة ومراسيمه، وما كان يدور بينه وبعض ندمائه من أحاديث في جلسات السمر. ووصف ملابسه وتحركات موكبه وصفاً يعجز عنه المشاهد العادي. وبعدها تأتي أخبار صلاح الدين وكأنها من قلب الحدث، وخاصة معركة بيت الأحزان حيث نلاحظ وصف شاهد عيان، مشارك في القتال. وآخرها حملة قراقوش على المغرب حيث لا توجد روايات أخرى بهذه الدقة والتفاصيل وخاصة حول بطون قبيلة سليم وقبائل البربر. وهناك مقارنة نلمحها في طيات الكتاب بين شخصية الخليفة الذي كان همه حسان الوجوه، وسماع المغنيات، والصيد ورمي البندق. وبين بساطة حياة صلاح الدين الأيوبي، وتقواه وجهاده عن الأمة والأرض والدين، وعظيم انتصاراته على جيوش أوروبا الغازية.
