هذا كتاب "سيرة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم" الذي استخرجه الإمام أبو محمد عبد الملك بن هشام المعافري، من كتاب "السيرة" لمحمد بن إسحاق المطلبي، وهو أقدم السير الجامعة وأصحها. يتناول المؤلف في هذه السيرة الحديث عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ونشأته، وذكر آبائه، وما سبق حياته من أحداث لها صلة بنشأه وحياة أصحابه الذين أبلوا معه في إقامة الدين.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك فهو يروي في هذه السيرة عن تلك الصفحة الأولى من تاريخ الأمة العربية، صفحة الجهاد في إقامة صرح الإسلام وجمع العرب تحت لواء الرسول محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم. وقد عمل ابن هشام على جمع هذه السيرة ودوّنها، وكان له فيها قلم لم ينقطع عن تعقب ابن إسحاق الكثير مما أورد بالتحرير والاختصار، والنقد، أو بذكر رواية أخرى فإن ابن إسحاق ذكرها، هذا إلى تكملة أضافها، وأخبار أتى بها.
