يختص هذا الكتاب بعلم من علوم القرآن الكريم وهو علم أسباب النزول حيث إن للكثير من الآيات القرآنية وقائع نزلت فيها، وهو علم جاء بالرواية والسماع، عن طريق أصحاب النبي وممن شاهدوا التنزيل ووقفوا على الأسباب، وهي - كما يورد الإمام النيسابوري / مؤلف الكتاب "إبانة ما أنزل فيه من الأسباب، إذ هي أوفى ما يجب الوقوف عليها وأولى ما تصرف العناية إليها لامتناع معرفة تفسير الآية وقصد سبيلها، دون الوقوف على قصتها وبيان نزولها، ولا يحل القول في أسباب نزول كتاب، إلا بالرواية والسماع ممن شاهدوا التنزيل ووقفوا على الأسباب ..." ولهذا الشرط يورد المؤلف ما يزيد على أربعمائة وسبعين حادثة وواقعة نزلت فيها الايات القرآنية مرتباً لها على حسب سور القرآن الكريم، وكل هذا يورده بالإسناد إلى صحابة رسول الله وعلماء عصره الذين يروون هذه الأسباب. لذلك نقع في هذا الكتاب على تفسير لأسباب كل سورة من سور القرآن الكريم وأولها ما أنزل الله على رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم "إقرأ باسم ربك الذي خلق ...". هذا في القسم الأول من الكتاب، أما القسم الثاني فجاء في كتاب "الناسخ والمنسوخ للإمام المحقق أبي القاسم هبة الله إبن سلامة أبي النصر، الذي بدأه بعبارة "ينبغي لمن أحب أن يتعلم شيئاً من علم هذا الكتاب أي (القرآن الكريم) الإبتداء في علم الناسخ والمنسوخ إتباعاً لما جاء عن أئمة السلف رضي الله عنهم ...". وأما ماذا يعني بـ الناسخ والمنسوخ فيقول " ... المنسوخ في كتاب الله عز وجلّ على ثلاثة أخرى. فمنه ما نسخ خطه وحكمه، ومنه ما نسخ خطه وبقي حكمه. ومنه ما نسخ حكمه وبقي خطه. فأما ما نسخ حكمه وخطه فمثل ما روي عن أنس بن مالك ... وأما ما نسخ خطه وبقي حكمه فمثل ما روي عن عمر بن الخطاب ... وأما ما نسخ حكمه وبقي خطه فهو في ثلاث وستين سورة مثل الصلاة إلى بيت المقدس والصيام والصفح عن المشركين والإعراض عن الجاهلين ... ". ومن الأمثلة التي يمكن إيرادها في هذا السياق قوله في "سورة الصف": نزلت بالمدينة ليس فيها ناسخ ولا منسوخ بل محكمة. و"سورة الطارق": نزلت بمكة محكمة إلا آية واحدة وهي قوله تعالى: "فمهل الكافرين أمهلهم رويداً" نسختها آية السيف".
