قبل ثلاثمائة سنة تقريباً انتفض شعب انجلترا وحاربوا ملكهم: تشارلز الأول، وفي النهاية كسبوا معركة عظيمة في "ناسيبي" وحبسوه وشكلوا حكومة جديدة. تتحدث الرواية عن أحد أصدقاء الملك تشارلز الأول الذين ماتوا يحاربون بشجاعة في ناسيبي وهو عقيد يدعى "بيفيرلي" كان يقطن في "آر نوود"، مات حزنت حزناً شديداً ومرضت حتى ماتت، كان لدى بيفيرلي أربعة أطفال، إدوارد وهمفري وأليس وإديث. وهكذا ترك الأطفال الأربعة بلا أي شخص يعتني بهم، ما عدا خادم وعجوز يدعى "جايكوب آرميتاج" فشعر أن من واجبه أن يحل محل الأب والأم معاً بالنسبة إلى الأطفال الأربعة، فكان حريصاً على حمايتهم من الجنود أعداء الملك الذين هموا بإحراق منزلهم الصغير في الغابة.. فهل سيتمكن جايكوب العجوز من حمايتهم وخصوصاً أن الجنود أصبحوا يعيثون فساداً في البلاد وقد قتلوا أصدقاء الملك في ناسيبي، وسجنوا آخرون فباتت أنكلترا مكاناً غير مرغوب فيه في ظل هكذا ظروف.
