الفكر الإقتصادي منذ بدايات تكوينه وبالخصوص المذهب التجاري في القرن السابع عشر نادى بضرورة أن تكون الدولة قوية، وهذا لن يكون إلا عن طريق الإقتصاد، فالثروة لدى هذا المذهب تتمثل في كمية المعادن النفيسة التي تمتلكها الدولة، وكلما زادت كمية هذه المعادن كلما زادت ثروتها، وكلما كانت كمية هذه المعادن ثابتة نسبياً كلما كانت الدولة قوية، وهي القادرة على إمتلاك القرار السياسي في إحتلال الدول الأخرى وإستعمارها وإستغلال مناجمها والحصول على المعادن النفيسة التي من شأنها أن تزيد ثروتها وتمنحها القوة في مواجهة الدول الأخرى، ولذلك نادى التجاريون بمبدأ حرية التجارة الدولية الذي يحقق أهدافهم في أن تكون الدولة قوية إقتصادياً.
ثم جاء المذهب التقليدي، الذي اهتم بدراسة موضوع التجارة الخارجية أو الدولية، وأشار إلى أهمية تقسيم العمل الدولي والتخصص على أساس الميزة النسبية لكل دولة، وتبنى سياسة حرية التجارة، ولكنها حينها كانت العلاقات الإقتصادية الدولية تدرس كجزء من النظريات الإقتصادية دون أن يكون لها ذاتية وخصوصية.
أما في العصر الحديث فقد أصبح للعلاقات الإقتصادية الدولية أهمية، مما جعلها فرعاً مهماً من فروع الإقتصاد، فالإقتصاد العالمي أصبح مترابطاً جدلياً إرتباطاً واضحاً، ويمتلك هيكلاً خاصاً به وقابلاً للتغيير بغير الأوضاع والظروف التي تمر بها العناصر المكونة له.
وإذا كنا لنا نقدم هنا الحلول والتحليلات لنواح متعددة للعلاقات الإقتصادية والتجارة الداخلية والخارجية، وأسس التبادل الدولي والنظريات المفسرة لها، وموضوع التكتلات والمنظمات الإقتصادية الدولية، فإن كثيراً من الكتَّاب المعاصرين قد قدموا في هذا المجال ما يخدم الإقتصاد الدولي.
