يوم السبت الواقع في 26 آب سنة 1950، طلب سيزار بافيز من شقيقته أن تهيئ له حقيبته الصغيرة. فهو على ما يبدو، كان عازماً على الذهاب لقضاء فرصة نهاية الأسبوع في الريف كما كانت عادته. ولكنه توجه إلى فندق "روما" الواقع تجاه محطة القطار، وحجز فيه غرفة حيث وجد في مساء الغد جثة هامدة على أثر تناوله ست عشرة حبة من الحبوب المنومة.
وقبل ذلك في 18 آب، كتب الكلمات الأخيرة من مذكراته اليومية: "لا كلمات، حركة وبعدها لن أكتب أبداً".
وفي 25 آب كتب هذه الأسطر وهي من رسالة إلى صديقه "ديفيد لاجولو" لم يتسلمها هذا الأخير إلا في اليوم التالي لوقوع المأساة.
"سأقوم برحلتي إلى مملكة الأموات بالعناد نفسه والإرادة الصلبة نفسها التي لدى (اللانجيين) وفور معرفة الخبر أكثر الصحافيون من التقديرات والتعليقات حول سبب تلك الوفاة أو أسبابها.
فالبعض منهم حملوا المسؤولية للحزب الشيوعي الذي كان بافيز عضواً فيه منذ ربيع سنة 1945، وقالوا أنه في خضم الهجوم البارد الجرانوفي لم يشعر بالارتياح. أما البعض الآخر فينسبونها إلى حزن ناتج عن الحب جاء يتوج سلسلة من الفشل العاطفي.
وأياً كان سبب وفاته عاطفياً أن سياسياً، فقد توفي سيزار بافيز مخلفاً وراءه كماً من المؤلفات القيمة الشعرية والروائية، ويهدف هذا الكتاب من سلسلة أعلام الفكر العالمي إلى إلقاء الضوء على هذا الكاتب العالمي والكشف عن سيرته الذاتية وتحليل شخصية ونظرته للحياة والموت والسياسة وذلك من خلال أفكاره التي بثها في كتاباتها ومنها نذكر: الفردوس فوق السطوح، أجداد الليل، الآلة-التيس، الأرض المحروقة، أعياد، أذيات، الاسم، مسؤوليات...
