وفي هذا الكتاب يقدم للطلاب تمارين لممارسة معظم مهارات التفكير الأساسية العشرين، المحددة من قبل الجمعية الأمريكية للإشراف وتطوير المناهج في كتابها "أبعاد التفكير" (1987). ويتم اكتساب هذه المهارات باستخدام محتوى المعلومات من الرياضيات، واللغة، والدراسات الاجتماعية والعلوم. هذا المحتوى للمنهاج المدرسي يجب أن يساعد الطلاب على ملاحظة ارتباط مهارات التفكير عند دراسة محتوى كل من هذه المواضيع، كما يجب أن يتمكن المعلمين للتأكد مما إذا كان الطلاب قد قاموا بإجراء عمليات ربط ذات معنى وإبداع بين المفاهيم الأساسية في مواضيع المناهج المختلفة هذه في ست الى ثمان سنوات المدرسية الأولى لهم.
