ارتبط العراق القديم بالأقاليم الخارجية المجاورة له بصلات تاريخية منذ أبعد عصور التاريخ من أجل ضمان الحصول على المواد الأولية الضرورية اللازمة لبناء الحضارة كالمعادن والأخشاب والأحجار الصالحة للبناء والنحت والأحجار الكريمة التي كانت تفتقر إليها بيئة بلاد الرافدين، ولعل من أهم البلدان التي تمتعت بصلات وثيقة مع بلاد الرافدين هي بلاد الشام إذ تمتد تلك الصلات بينهما إلى عصور قبل التاريخ وهذا ما دلت عليه الدراسات والأبحاث الآثارية التي جرت في مواقع عديدة على أرض البلدين واستمرت تلك الصلات الحضارية والعلاقات السياسية عبر مختلف العهود التاريخية وتركزت بصورة جلية وواضحة في مواقع الشمال السوري مما جعل المنطقة وحدة حضارية متكاملة مع بلاد الرافدين وهذا ما هدفت إلى تأكيده هذه الدراسة من خلال ما تم التوصل إليه من أدلة آثارية مهمة تثبت وحدة المنطقة الجغرافية الحضارية.
