آنّا كارينينا، أثر أدبي عالمي وإنساني خالد، ترجم إلى معظم لغات العالم، وتأتي هذه الرواية بعد رواية "الحرب والسلم" شهرة وأهمية وحجماً، فإذا كانت "الحرب والسلم" قد أرخت البطولة الروسية في وجه الغزو الامبراطوري الفرنسي، فإنّ "آنّا كارينينا" أرخت الحياة الاجتماعية الروسية، ولا سيما حياة النخبة. فأحداث الرواية ساحة تتحرك في رحابها طبقة من النبلاء الروس الذين ودعوا نظام القنانة وانتقلوا من الإقطاع القديم إلى ارستقراطية جديدة. تطفو على سطح أحداث آنّا كارينينا نماذج بشرية متنوعة، معظمها مريض مرض الطبقية، مرض النبل، مرض الإرث الثقيل، والنماذج البشرية هذه هي غالبا نماذج مهتزة غير سوية، تتفاعل في داخلها صراعات كثيرة، أبرزها ما بين القلب والعقل أو بين الحب والواجب، وما بين القديم والجديد، وما بين العبودية والعدالة أو المساواة. وبعد كل ذلك آنا كارينينا هي عصارة جهد تولستوي وفيها الكثير من نفسه، ومن آرائه، ومثله وتجاربه الشخصية التي يجسدها غالباً البطل الريفيّ ليفين، ويجسد بعضها ألكسيس كارنين، وهي إلى جانب ذلك لوحة تصور المجتمع الروسي في أدق مرحلة من مراحل تاريخه، فتكشف علله وتناقضاته، وطبيعته وتقليده للغرب، وفيها نفحة إنسانية لا مثيل لها في الأعمال الروائية، وتولستوي في روايته هذه مؤمن في العمق فهو ما فتئ يبشر بالمحبة، ويذوب رحبة، ويغفر لمن أساء إليه، ويرفض أن يكون أول من يرمي الآنية بحجر، بيد أنّه بقي في مسألة الزواج مقيّداً بحدود الشريعة والقانون.
