يأتي هذا الكتاب من ضمن سلسلة كتب (أشهر الأسرار العالمية) لمؤلفها جولي واغز، وهذا هو الكتاب الخامس وعنوانه "أشهر جرائم الحب".
يخيط الكتاب بأشهر جرائم الحبّ خلال القرون (الثامن عشر - التاسع عشر - العشرون)، ومنها جرائم دموية، وأخرى استعملت فيها السموم، وجرائم غرائم ارتكبت بأعصاب باردة حسب تعبير المؤلف.
ويبدأ الكتاب بجريمة ارتكبت قبل أربعة قرون مضت عند (الإليزايتيين) كان ضحيتها "توماس أردن" من أعيان بلدة كنتش البريطانية وعمدة فافر شام، والقاتل هو زوجته وعشيقها اللذان شنقا فيما بعد في لندن وأحرقت جثتيهما.
ومن الطرق العنيفة في القتل يذكر المؤلف الطريقة التي اختارتها كاترين هايس للتخلص من زوجها وهي السم حيث إن أكثرية النساء اللواتي أردن التخلص من زوج غير مرغوب فيه يعمدن إلى تخزين السم من الجسد، أما أول قضية تسميم لعب فيها الدليل الطبي دوراً حاسماً كانت محاكمة ماري بلاندي في العام (1751) المتهمة بتسميم زوجها بواسطة الارسنيك... لتشنق فيما بعد...
وفي الكتاب أيضاً جرائم غرام مشهورة بنى على أحداثها الروائيون أعمالهم ومنهم تيودور داريزر في رويته الشهيرة مأساة أميركية حصلت في 11 تموز / يوليو عام 1906، كما يستعرض الكتاب جرائم عن المنحرفون جنسياً في العصر الفيكتوري (1902)، ومن جرائم القرن العشرين في الغرام جريمة طومسون وبايووترز تعادلها جريمة هول - ميلز... والتي كانت أشهر الجرائم في العشرينات، وقصص حقيقية أخرى عن أشهر جرائم الحب...
