تندرج هذه الدراسة عن الاستراتيجية السورية في لبنان ضمن المحددات التالية: أولاً: تاريخياً: تبدأ بالمرحلة التي شهدت ولادة دولتي سوريا ولبنان، بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى، وبالتحديد منذ وصول الأمير فيصل إلى سوريا فاتحاً (في تشرين الأول سنة 1918)... وحتى حكم الرئيس حافظ الأسد، ثانياً: ليس هدف الدراسة، استعراض العلاقات التاريخية بين لبنان وسوريا، وإنما اختيار مراحل تاريخية مفصلة ومعبرة في علاقات البلدين وخاصة: مرحلة فيصل ولبنان 1918-1920، مرحلة الجامعة العربية والاستقلال 1942-1945، مرحلة القطيعة 1950، مرحلة الوحدة والانفصال 1958-1963، مرحلة الخلاف اللبناني الفلسطيني 1969-1973، مراحل الحرب الحالية 1975... ثالثاً: إن هذه الدراسة تعرض وجهة نظر المسؤولين السوريين عن لبنان ولا تعرض وجهة النظر اللبنانية سواء المؤيدة منها لسوريا أو المعارضة لها. لهذا وجد المؤلف ضرورة الاعتماد على تصريحات المسؤولين السوريين والتي تشكل بمجموعها النظرة الاستراتيجية السورية إلى لبنان. فهذه الدراسة، كما يدل عنوانها تعرض الموقف السوري من لبنان ولا تعرض الموقف اللبناني من سوريا.
