في هذا العمل تطوف الهوية الدينية في جنبات الأدب، بشخصيات تخرج عن الطابع العابر لتنتقل إلى عالم الخلود.
عبر مجموع قصص قصيرة يحاول "يوسف يوسف" الإجابة على غموض الوجود، والإستفسار عن معنى الحقيقة وتفسير علامات القدر وإشاراته الملغزة.
في ليلة المعراج الأخيرة يطرق الراوي شخصية الخضر في الدين الإسلامي، ففي معسكر للقتال يرى (أحمد الرشيد) في منامه "رجل يخرج من الأرض الحرام، يسترسل خلفه نور، وحوله نور، ثم يحوم فوقنا، ويختفي...؟". عندئذ انتشرت قصة الرجل الذي يطلع من الأرض الحرام صاعداً نحو الأعالي بين شباب المعسكر، ثيابه نور، وحوله نور، أشعث الشعر، وقد تعفر وجهه بالتراب. وهنا افترست الحيرة أصدقاء (الرشيد) وهو ما زال يسهب في الحديث عن الصرخة التي سمعها، فانقسم الناس بين مستنكر وبين مؤيد وأخذ المجتمعون ينسلون الواحد تلو الآخر، خافضي الرؤوس، شاردي الأذهان، تنتزع الحيرة من عيونهم بريقها...
تحاول هذه القصة وبقية القصص الأخرى في هذه المجموعة تأكيد قسم الشهادة والحق، والإلتحام أكثر بعالم الآخرة.. وهذا ما نلمسه في إجابات الناس كل ما أخبره (الرشيد) لأصدقائه "إن روح الشهيد تبقى تحوم إلى أن يأتي من يأخذ بثأرها". ويقول آخر "حيث جنة الله بانتظار الشهيد، باحثاً في السماء عن رجل طائر يحوم وسط هالةٍ من نور، جسمه وشكله نور، ولكن...".
يضم الكتاب إثنتي عشر قصة قصيرة نذكر من عناوينها: "صباح جميل"، "رباعية الشهيد"، ليلة اكتمال القمر"، "لسراب المدن"، "الموت والعطش"...الخ.
