قصيدة (أغنية نفسي) تمثل ذروة نشيد الشاعر، فهي قصيدة واثقة من مضمونها. وما بدا لبعض المعلقين والنقاد الأوائل على أنه نوع من الفوضى الشعرية، أصبح ينظر إليه اليوم على أنه بنية متعمدة وواعية- وربما كانت مثالاً حداثياً مبكراً لما يدعى طريقة التداعي الحر، على الرغم من أنها تداعيات مضبوطة جيداً، مسبوكة ومصقولة، تتجاوز ما يلج الشعور والإدراك للوهلة الأولى. الحركة في القصيدة دائرية أكثر منها تصاعدية، فالنفس تعود دائماً الى ذاتها، في فعل استحضار اللذة والبوح، والتأكيد على التماهي مع الوجود، عبر ذاك التناغم الحر بين الجسد والروح، الأنا والآخر، حيث تتحول أغنية الشاعر الى احتفالية ملحمية، تدمج الكوني بالشخصي، وتصهر المتناقضات في بوتقة واحدة. ويرى النقاد أن هذه القصيدة هي من أهم نصوص ويتمان على الإطلاق، فهي تلخص رؤيته للعالم، وتستقرأ أبجدية ما يسمى الحلم الأمريكي، وتكشف نزوع الفرد الى الانعتاق من ربقة المؤسسة، والنظام، والعقيدة. كما أنها تمثل تجسيداً شعرياً هائلاً لتلك الأسس الفلسفية التي قامت عليها الفلسفة الماورائية.
