يعد كتاب "شرح اللمحة البدرية في علم العربية" من أظهر كتب ابن هشام على تواضع صفحاته، فالمتأمل فيه يجد أنّه ليس شرحاً تقليدياً، أطال فيه صاحبه مختصراً، أو وسّع متناً، وإنما هو كتاب تراحبت أبوابه، وفصوله، وغرزت مادته، وإستطاع فيه مصنفه بما أوتى من عمق التفكير ورشاقة الأسلوب أنْ يخرج الحقائق العلمية سافرة جلية بعيدة عن التكلف والتقعر فقد أخذ فيه بتشريح الأقوال وتعقيب الآراء وفصّل القول في ذكر الفروع والأصول وطرق مسائل الخلاف، وأظهر ما اعترى آراء النحاة من الخطأ، وبيّن مواطن الصواب، فانتصر لهذا واعترض ذاك مدلّلاً على ذلك بالحجج اللائحة والبراهين الساطعة، فجاء شرحه مكتملاً غاية في الدقة والفائدة يقف في صف أشهر مؤلفاته الأخرى.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى الدكتور هادي نهر بتحقيقه مقسماً عمله على قسمين: الأول: الدراسة، والثاني: التحقيق، وسلك في الدراسة منهجاً قائماً على التبويب والتفصيل والترقيم ومعتمداً الإختيار، والموارنة والكشف، وقد توزّعت الدراسة على ثلاثة فصول ومقدمة وخاتمة.
أما الفصل الأول فقد وقف فيه المؤلف على تكوين ابن هشام الفكري، ومناحي ثقافته المتنوعة المشارب، وطبيعة العصر الذي عاش فيه، ثم حاول المؤلف رسم صورة واضحة المعالم عن آثار ابن هشام المطبوعة منها والمخطوطة، والمفقودة، وبيان أسباب كثرتها، ودراسة أشهرها مادة، ومنهجاً، لا تبيّن من خلال ذلك موقع كتاب شرح اللمحة من بينها، وهذا كلّه قد استوعبه الفصل الثاني.
وقد ساقني هذا الفصل إلى دراسة كتاب شرح اللمحة البدرية، ثم تعرض في الفصل الثالث إلى كتاب اللمحة لابن حيان مادته، والغاية من تصنيفه، وشروحه ثم عرّج على دراسة اللمحة فثبت عنوانه، وبيان زمن تأليفه ومادته العلمية، ومصادره، وموقف ابن هشام من ابن حيان فيه.
أما القسم الثاني فقد أورد فيه الكتاب محققاً، وقد صنَّف في آخره فهارس عامة تُيسَّر للباحثين الرجوع إليه.
