اهتم علماء النفس وغيرهم بدراسة الشخصية الإنسانية. إذ يرجعون إليها ما يصيبه الإنسان من نجاح أو فشل في حياته العملية والعاطفية، والإنسان وإن كنا نراه في الواقع كلاً موحداً إلا أنه يتألف من جزئين أو قسمين مختلفين كما يذهب الفلاسفة وعلماء النفس، الجزء الأول مادي بحت هو الجسم، والآخر لا مادي هو النفس، والكتاب برمته يركز على العلاقة التي تربط الجسم بالنفس وكيف يمكن أن يؤثر كل منهما في الآخر.
يعرض المؤلف في الفصل الأول لدراسة الخلية الآدمية والصفات الوراثية في الشخصية الإنسانية فيقدم وصفاً متكاملاً لأجزاء الخلايا التي يتألف منها جسم الإنسان كما يعرض لوصف أشكالها وأحجامها ويدلي ببراهين تفيد بأن الجينات هي المهيمنة على الوراثة وأن خط المرء من الصفات يأخذه الفرد من السلف وأن كل خاصية جسمانية تورث وفقاً لقواعد يمكن التدليل على صحتها. أما الفصل الثاني فيبحث في أثر الجهاز العصبي في عملية السيطرة على حياة الإنسان وتحركاته وانفعالاته فيقدم وصفاً للجهاز العصبي، حيث تعتمد شخصية الإنسان على خصائص المخ وما يحتويه من ميزات. وفي الفصل الثالث فهو مخصص لدراسة الغدد ذات الإفراز الداخلي إذ تؤثر هذه الغدد في الشخصية كما يؤثر فيها نوع الجهاز العصبي الموروث سواء بسواء.
وقد ركز البحث في هذا الفصل على الغدد الدرقية وجارة الدرقية والغدة النخامية والتيموس والبنكرياس وغدة الكظر والغدد الجنسية وذلك لارتباط هذه الغدد بتكوين الشخصية. ويعرض الفصل الرابع للحواس والإحساس والإدراك الحسي ولوظائف كل منها مع بيان التشريح الوظيفي لكل حاسة منها. أما الفصل الخامس فهو عرض مفصل لطبيعة العلاقة بين النفس والجسم تلك القضية التي شغلت الفلاسفة على مر العصور. كما يتناول الفصل المدى الذي تحدد فيه الصفات الجسمانية لشخص ما شخصيته.
