انتزع ريتشارد الأول ملك إنكلترا جزيرة قبرص من حاكمها البيزنطي سنة 1191، خلال الحملة الصليبية الثالثة، وبقيت تحت الحكم الغربي حتى الفتح العثماني سنة 1570-1571. ومن التسعينات في القرن الثاني عشر حتى السبعينات في القرن الخامس عشر، ظلت الجزيرة مملكة محكومة من قبل أعضاء من عائلة لوزينيان. التي قدمت من بواتو في غربي فرنسا وفرضت طبقة أوروبية جديدة من الملاكين العقاريين وهيراركية كنسية كاثوليكية، على السكان اليونانيين الأصليين: على أن نظام لوزينيان وفر فترات طويلة من الاستقرار السياسي ، وفترة مرموقة من الازدهار امتدت حتى أواخر القرن الرابع عشر.
وفي القرن الثالث عشر، كانت الجزيرة وثيقة الصلة بالدول اللاتينية في سوريا وفي الأراضي المقدسة بروابط سياسية واجتماعية واقتصادية. وبسقوط آخر المعاقل المسيحية في أيدي المسلمين في عام 1291، تحولت الجزيرة إلى مركز هو الأبعد شرقاً للمسيحية اللاتينية في البحر الأبيض المتوسط. إن هذه الدراسة الجديدة المبينة على بحث أصيل، تتبع تاريخ قبرص في ظل سلالتها الملكية، وتقدم شرحاً لدورها في الحروب الصليبية، وفي المواجهة بين المسيحي والمسلم في الشرق الأدبي حتى السبعينات من القرن الرابع عشر حين أصيبت بضعف بالغ في حرب لها مع جنوي.
