الدكتور عبد العزيز الدوري رائد في الكتابة التاريخية العربية. لقد وسّع مجال البحث التاريخي، فاهتم بما سكت عنه الآخرون. ذهب إلى بحث عن وقائع الماضي، لا في ما رواه المؤرخون، إنما بحث عنها في ما لم يكن معتاداً البحث فيه.
على أن مأثرة الدكتور الدوري الكبرى أنه فتح ميداناً دراسياً في البحث التاريخي، كان فيه رائداً ومرجعيّاً، هو التاريخ الاقتصادي. ولعلّ كتاب تاريخ العراق الاقتصادي في القرن الرابع الهجري يشكّل نقطة انطلاق مهمة، لا في مسيرة الدوري العلمية فحسب، بل في مسار حركة التاريخ العربي المعاصر، فهو بداية تأسيسية ومبكّرة لحقل جديد من حقول التاريخ.
وكان للدوري دور في خدمة المكتبة العربية، إذ صدر كتابه الشهير بحث في نشأة علم التاريخ عند العرب، ففيه التقاط دقيق للحلقات التأريخية المرجعية الموصلة إلى النص التاريخي المدوّن، إضافة إلى إنجازه المنهجي المتمثل في اتساع استخدامه أنواعاً متعددة من المصادر.
أما في حقل التاريخ للإيديولوجيا والأفكار السياسية فقد كتب الدوري ثلاثيته المشهورة: الجذور التاريخية للقومية العربية والجذور التاريخية للشعوبية والجذور التاريخية للاشتراكية العربية، وهي تشهد – بحق -على سيرة هذا المؤرّخ المناضل، الذي عرف كيف يمزج بين الذاكرة والتاريخ ونضج ثقافته القومية في رؤية الظاهرات الاجتماعية والسياسية الحديثة.
ثم جاز سجال "الجذور" وتجاوزه في نقلة معرفية تجلّت في كتاب التكوين التاريخي للأمة العربية: دراسة في الهوية والوعي، معيداً بناء الأفكار السياسية العربية، في نظرة تاريخية تكوينية وتطورية، باحثاً عن سمة الاستمرارية في فكر الأمة عند العرب.
هذا الكتاب بحلقته النقاشية والشهادات، يعكس رأي نخبة من المثقفين العرب، الذين أحبوا أن يقولوا، نيابة عن الأمة العربية، للأستاذ الدكتور عبد العزيز الدوري: شكراً.
