قد تكون قصة القتال ضد الدبابات أقصر القصص في تاريخ الحروب، حتى إنها أقصر من قصة الحرب الجوية، فقد بدأت عام 1917 عندما كان عمر حرب الطائرات سنتين، وبعد أن كانت الغواصات والرادارات وغيرها من وسائل الحرب الحديثة قد دخلت معترك القتال وشاركت فيه مشاركة فعالة.
أما الدبابات فإنها حتى نهاية الحرب العالمية الأولى كانت ما تزال معضلة يعاني منها الحلفاء، وكان الاختصاصيون في مقاومة الدبابات غير متوافرين إلا في الجانب الألماني، من هنا كان الاتجاه نحو دراسة هذا الموضوع دراسة متأنية لدى التحضير لحروب المستقبل.
لقد وضع هذا الكتاب لسرد هذه القصة المثيرة منذ البداية حتى هذه الأيام ولكن بشكل موجز حتى لا يتسرب الملل إلى نفس القارئ. فهي قصة الرجال الذين يحاربون الآلات، وقصة المعدات التي يستخدمها هؤلاء الرجال. كما أن القصة تدور حول أسلحة مقاومة الدروع التي حملها أو سحبها أو دفعها الجنود الراجلون. أما العربات المدرعة والمدافع غير المرتدة فقد استبعدت لأنها موضوع له صفة التخصص المستقل الذي عالجه كتاب آخرون.
