يعتبر هذا الكتاب من كتب البلاغة التعليمية لا التنظيرية، فمادته تتسم باليسر وحسن التقسيم، وفيه جانب تطبيقي بلغ منه المراد. وأصله مخطوطه جمع فيها العلامة "الرازي" علوم البيان والمعاني والبديع في حقل واحد، فكانت بحق روضة للفصاحة.
وهو كتاب في البلاغة متوسط في الزمان، فلا هو بالمتقدم ولا بالمتأخر سلك فيه مؤلفه سبيلاً فريداً لم يألفه من تقدمه، وتابعه عليه من تأخر عنه، فكان فاتحة نمط من التأليف في البلاغة العربية.
ولأهمية هذه المخطوطة: أقدم المحقق على تحقيقيها ونشرها في الناس، رغبة في تقديم كتاب بلاغي اجتمع له من الخصائص ما لم يجتمع لغيره، وسعي لبث مرجع تعليمي خال من التعقيد.
ويبدأ الكتاب بمقدمات موجزة، ثم يشرع في الكلام على أهم فنون البلاغة العربية، وهي عشرة فنون: التشبيه، الاستعارة، التمثيل، الكناية، التورية، مراعاة النظير، التأكيد والتضمين، الاقتباس، عكس الجمل، القلب، والتجنيس.
