اختار الدكتور زهير عبيدات نماذج روائيّة تمثّل رواية الأجيال على مدى ثلاثة عقود تقريباً، هي: "ثلاثيّة نجيب محفوظ" في الخمسينات، ورواية "العصاة" لصدقي إسماعيل في الستّينات، وخماسيّة "مدن الملح" لعبد الرحمن منيف في الثمانينات، غير غافل عن روايات أجيال قد تقترب أو تختلف في المفهوم والبناء من مثل رباعيّة إسماعيل فهد إسماعيل، أو ثلاثيّة سهيل إدريس.
ولم يكتفِ برصد الظواهر الإجتماعيّة والسياسيّة والنفسيّة والحضاريّة للأجيال المتعاقبة، وإنّما وقف عند ظواهر فنيّة اكسبت دراسته مصداقيّة عالية، وهو الّذي تصدّى لقراءة آلاف الصفحات وتحليلها تحليلاً عميقاً.
لقد وقف عند ظواهر مهمّة تتّصل في جوهرها بالزمن وعلاقته بالإنسان الفاعل الأساسيّ في الحركة الإجتماعيّة وما يتصل بالزمان من الوعي وفكرة الخلود والزمن الدائريّ في رؤية الحضارة العربية الإسلاميّة، ووقف عند معالجة رواية الأجيال لمصير الدول والحضارات.
"رواية الأجيال" و "رواية الأزمان" و"الرواية النهريّة" و "رواية الحقبة" و"الرواية الإنسيابيّة" مصطلحات متعدّدة لمسمّى واحد، وقد اخترت مصطلح "رواية الأجيال" في هذه الدراسة.
لعلّ من أبرز نماذجها "الملهاة البشريّة" و"الحرب والسلام" و"المدن الخمس" و"قصّة أسرة فورسايت" و"آل تيبو".
تعود أصولها إلى الأدب الأوروبي، وتطوّرت عن رواية القرن التاسع عشر، وازدهرت نماذجها في الربع الثاني من القرن العشرين، وصارت تيّاراً عالمياً.
أطلق عليها الروائيّ الفرنسي "رولان بارت" اسم Le Roman - Fleuve، ومعنى Fleuve: نهر كبير له عدّة فروع، وله إنسياب طويل يصبّ في بحر.
