تعد رسالة الإمام محدَث الشام رحلة المسندين الشيخ إسماعيل العجلوني، المدرس تحت قبة النسر بالجامع الأموي بدمشق، المسماة: "عقد الجوهر الثمين في أربعين حديثاً من أحاديث سيد المرسلين" رسالة عظيمة النفع، فقد تلقاها العلماء وتفاخروا بالإسناد إلى مؤلفها، فانتشرت في الآفاق وسمعها الطلبة على شيوخهم لطلب الإجازة، وليعم اتصال الأسانيد وينتشر، ولعلَ سبب انتشارها أن مؤلفها كان تقياً صالحاً زاهداً خاشعاً ملازماً للعبادات والتهجد، عالماً فاضلاً محباً للعلم وأهله، تلقى العلم عن كبار العلماء والمحدَثين ونال الإجازات والأسانيد العالية من شيوخه الثقات الكبار قراءةَ وسماعاً وإجازة، وبذلك نالت هذه الرسالة الشهرة الواسعة عند علماء الإسلام.
ورغبة في تعميم النفع، قام الأستاذ محمد الحافظ بتحقيق هذه الرسالة وإخراجها تحقيقاً جديداً معتمداً على مخطوطات منها قيَمة، وعلى الأصول المحققة للكتب الأربعين التي أوردها الإمام العجلوني في هذه الرسالة.
عقد الجوهر الثمين إنها أحاديث الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم التي استهوت القلوب على مر العصور، جمعها الشيخ إسماعيل العجلوني من كتب الأحاديث المشهورة، لتسهيل قراءتها والتعرف عليها وحفظها من قبل طلبة العلم. لقد بذل المحقق جهداً في مقابلة النسخة المخطوطة مع غيرها من النسخ ودقق النصوص،وشرحها، وتتبع، وتتبع الأسانيد، وشرح بعض الألفاظ ليساعد على إيضاح النص. إنه كتاب تداولته الأجيال لقداسة النصوص ولسهولة قراءته وحفظه.
