لم يعد البحث في الوصف الإبتدائي كافياً، وبات التعمق في البحث مهماً جداً للوصول إلى اتجاهات إبتكارية في التصميم، إن التصميم ليس تفريغاً لأشكال وكتل وألوان وخطوط، وإنما واجهة من واجهات البحث الفلسفي، وبدونها تبقى الننائج لا تتجاوز المعرفة والتزيينات بوصفها المجردة. وللوصول إلى أعلى درجات الإتقان في التصميم، يجب البحث في أسس وعناصر التصميم وطرق العمل للوصول إلى قمة الإبداع الفني، ويمكن تعريف التصميم بأنه الإبتكار التشكيلي أو خلق أشياء جميلة ممتعة، أو هو عمل خلاّق يحقق غرضه، حيث تعتمد عملية التصميم على قدرة المصمم على الإبتكار لأنه يستغل ثقافته وقدرته التخيلية في خلق عمل جديد، أو تطوير عمل سابق. ولا تتم عملية التصميم في الفن التطبيقي في إطار شخص واحد، ولكنها عملية إجتماعية تشمل أناساً كثيرين.
تنبع أهمية التصميم في واقع حاجتنا؛ فالتصميم الجيد كان وما يزال أساس كل عمل فني في كل العصور، فجودة التصميم هي الأساس وهي التي تزودنا بالخبرة الفنية التي نحس بها اتجاه أي عمل فني سواء كان عملاً بسيطاً من أعمال الصناعيين أو عمل خزّاف أو مصمم عالمي. وإن طابع أي عمل فني وفرديته ينبعان من المشاعر الخاصة للفنان أو المهندس أو الصانع، وهو يعبر باللون وقيمته وبالخط وبالمساحات التي يمنتجها ليعبر عنها بتصاميم ذات قيم ودلالات ورموز تمتلك ما تمتلكه من الطاقات التعبيرية لذات التصميم.
إن التصميم في الفنون التشكيلية من الإتجاهات الجديرة بالإهتمام والتركيز، ومن هنا كان واجباً أن تسلط عليه الأضواء بغرض دراسته دراسة علمية، والكشف عن مكوناته وتحليل مكوناته لتكون هداية للفنان أثناء سعيه في إبداع أعماله الفنية. وكذلك ليكون محكاً ومعياراً لقياس جودة أي تصميم فني.
