بعد رُبع قرن من وفاة شكسبير سنة 1616 وُجِد لكُتَاب المسرحية والممثلين أعداء أقوياء، بحيث أغلقت كافة المسارح في لندن بمرسوم، وكان ذلك لأسباب أخلاقية من جهة ولأسباب سياسية من جهة أخرى.
سبقت ذلك حملة كتابات صحفية ومنشورات ظالمةً من قبل الأخلاقيين المتزمتّين ضدّ التأديات المسرحية لجيلين قبل ان تكون لمؤيدي كرومويل السلطة الكافية لغلق المسارح عام 1642، متذرعين بأن تأديات المسرح العام لا تتفق وظروف الوضع الراهن.
إلا أن الحقيقة ألزمت البرلمانيين أن يعترفوا بأن المسارح أمكنة مناسبة لإلتقاء الملكيين المؤيدين لتشارلز الأول.
والحقيقة الهامة، أن المنع ماقضى على المسرحية بل أخّرها كثيراً، والاكثر من ذلك، فقد خلق تطوراً في فن آخر - الأوبرا - والذي صار في القرون اللاحقة، منافساً قوياً للمسرحية الخلوة من الموسيقى.
ما كان فن الأوبرا تطوراً مستورداً جديداً، وإنما فناً طموحاً وشكلاً مُعداً حسناً من أشكال التسلية، فالقناع كان مألوفاً، منذ مندة، في البلاط الإنكليزي وبين الأرستقراطيين، حتى الشاعر المتزمت الأعظم جون ملتن، لم يتردد عن كتابة مسرحيات للمسرح المقنّع، وكان أشهرها مسرحية "كوموس" حيث مُثلت من قبل أرستقراطيين هواة في لود كاسل سنة 1634.
في غضون الثّمان عشرةَ سنة اللاحقة حتى عصر العودة - Restoration - في عهد تشارلز الثاني سنة 1660، تنفست المسرحية الإنكليزية وبطريقة غير شمولية، إذ كانت تؤدي في البيوت الخاصة بدلاً من المسارح العامة، وهنا انتشر الفن الجديد المنافس - الأوبرا -.
