خلال العقد الماضي كان هناك ثورة ضخمة في تطبيقات الحاسب التعليمي ولا يزال إستخدام الحاسب في مجال التربية والتعليم في بداياته التي تزداد يوماً بعد يوم، بل أخذ أشكالاً عدة فمن الحاسب في التعليم إلى إستخدام الإنترنت في التعليم وأخيراً ظهر مفهوم التعليم الإلكتروني الذي يعتمد على التقنية لتقديم المحتوى التعليمي للمتعلم بطريقة جيدة وفعالة.
كما أن هناك خصائص ومزايا لهذا النوع من التعليم وتبرز أهم المزايا والفوائد في إختصار الوقت والجهد والتكلفة إضافة إلى إمكانية الحاسب في تحسين مستوى العام للتحصيل الدراسي، ومساعدة المعلم والطالب في توفير بيئة تعليمية جذابة، لا تعتمد على المكان أو الزمان.

ويعد التعليم الإلكتروني أسلوباً من أساليب التعليم في إيصال المعلومة للمتعلم، ويتم فيه إستخدام آليات الإتصال الحديثة من حاسب آلي وشبكاته ووسائطه المتعددة من صوت وصورة ورسوميات وآليات بحث ومكتبات إلكترونية، وكذلك بوابات الإنترنت سواء كان عن بعد أو في الفصل الدراسي، أي إستخدام التقنية بجميع أنواعها في إيصال المعلومة للمتعلم بأقصر وقت وأقل جهد وأكبر فائدة.
