كتاب "البحر الزّخّار الجامع لمذاهب علماء الأمصار"، لمؤلفه الإمام احمد بن يحي بن المرتضى، الزيدي مذهباً، هو في الحقيقة كتاب جمع بين دفتيه علماً جمّاً، وبياناً شاملاً للأقوال العقدية، والأصولية، والفقهية المقارنة، وكان أكثرها استيعاباً وشمولاً لأقوال الفقهية، لأن الكتاب ألف لهذا خصوصاً، وما سبقه من أقوال عقدية وأصولية وفلسفية، كانت بمثابة التقدمة للكتاب. وهذا المنصف مفيد جداً ومهم للدارسين والباحثين في الفقه المقارن، وذلك لأنه استوعب-تقريباً-المسائل الفقهية والاختلافات الواردة فيها وعزوها إلى أصحابها.
ونظراً لأهمية الكتاب وأهمية موضوعه فقد عني الدكتور "محمد محمد تامر" بتحقيقه، حيث تجلى عمله، أولاً حرص المحقق على أن يكون الكتاب مضبوطاً ضبطاً شبه كامل، ثانياً: عني بتوثيق التخريجات التي بهامش الكتاب والمسماة بكتاب "جواهر الأخبار والآثار المستخرجة من لجنة البحر الّزخّار" وهي للشيخ العلامة محمد بن يحي بهران الصعدي. ثالثاً: اهتم بكتابة بعض التعليقات على الكتاب، يتضمن بعضها تعقيباً على المؤلف أحياناً، وبعضها الآخر توضيحاً لمغزى الكلام وبيان المزاد فيه، رابعاً: وضع ترجمة للمؤلف وتقديماً للكتاب تعلم الأستاذ علي بن عبد الكريم بن محمد الفضيل، والأستاذ عبد الله محمد صديق الغماري، والقاضي عبد الله الجرافي الصنعاني، وذلك لمعرفتهم التامة بالمذهب الزيدي.
