يأتي هذا الكتاب من ضمن سلسلة (رجال حول الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم) ويختص بتعريف القارىء المسلم بشخصية "الإمام علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه" وفقاً لعقيدة أهل السُّنة. يبدأ الكتاب بمدخل عن نسبه رضي الله عنه :هو علي بن أبي طالب بن عبد المطلب ... إبن عم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وأمه فاطمة بنت أسد .. وكان لعلي رضي الله عنه من الأخوة : طالب وعقيل وجعفر .. وله أختان: أم هانئ وجمانة، وجميع أخوته لأمه فاطمة رضي الله عنها. بعد ذلك، ينتقل الكاتب إلى قصة إسلامه رضي الله عنه حسب روايات (المسند) للإمام أحمد بن حنبل، وهجرته إلى مكة، ومشاهدهُ مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم. فهو الذي شهد بدراً مع النبي، وكانت له اليد البيضاء فيها، ثم موقفه يوم خيبر، وكان موقفاً شجاعاً قال عنه الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم "لأعطين الراية رجلاً يحب الله ورسوله، ويحبه الله ورسوله، ويفتح الله عليه"، كما شهد غزوة حُنين وهزم المشركين في هوازن في السنة (8) للهجرة.
هذا، ويتطرق الكتاب إلى حادثة المباهلة، ويشرح معناها، ويورد ما نزل فيها في كتاب الله "فمن حاج فيه من بعد ما جاءك عن العلم ..." إلى آخر الآية، كما يشهد الكتاب على قضاء علي رضي الله عنه في اليمن وعدله، وروايات أخرى عن علاقة الإمام بصحابة رسول الله عبر تسليط الضوء على أمور جرت في عصر عمر وأبي بكر، كما يتحدث الكاتب عن زهده رضي الله عنه "كان يوزع ما في بيت مال المسلمين على المسلمين" ... وهكذا وصولاً إلى بدايات الخطر التي بدأت تلوح بالأفق، ومقتله رضي الله عنه عام (40) للهجرة.
