يتناول الكتاب شخصية المفكر الإسلامي جمال الدين الأفغاني كواحد من أبرز المفكرين الإصلاحيين في القرن التاسع عشر، عصر النهضة. حيث خصص الفصل الأول لسيرته الذاتية ثم تناول في الفصل الثاني الفكر السياسي عند الأفغاني وقد تضمن الفصل الثالث رد الأفغاني على محاضرة أرنست رينان الذي مثل واحداً من أهم كتاب عصره في فرنسا في تلك الفترة من القرن التاسع عشر.
على الرغم مما كتب عنه، ومما دار حوله من أبحاث جمة، فإن عصر النهضة العربية في القرن التاسع عشر وحتى مطلع هذا القرن، لا زال في أمس الحاجة إلى الدراسة المعمّقة، والنظرة النقدية الرامية إلى تبينان ما له وما عليه فهو، بإشكالياته ورموزه والمسائل التي تطارحتها شخصياته، يبقى عصراً ملتبساً إلى صح التعبير. فالمسائل الفكرية/الدينية/الفلسفية/السياسية/الاجتماعية التي شكلت الهمّ الأساس لمفكري ذلك العصر، لا تزال بحاجة إلى فحص ودرس، وإلى النظرة النقدية العقلانية. نقول ذلك مع معرفتنا بأن، (قضايا القلق) التي عاشت في ذلك العصر لا تزال هي نفسها-وفي جانب كبير منها-تعيش في هذا العصر، وتسبب قلقاً كبيراً لمثقفيه.
انطلاقاً من ذلك، رأينا أن نقدم هذه الموسوعة حول عصر النهضة العربية، الجديدة في أسلوبها وفي منهجها النقدي وفي إحاطتها الشاملة بكل ما يمت إلى الإشكاليات والقضايا التي أقلقت مفكري ذلك العصر. ونحن إذ نأمل بأن تحظى هذه الموسوعة بثقة القراء العرب وأن تقدم شيئاً جديداً يفيد الباحث المتخصص كما يفيد الطالب والمثقف، نعِد بأن تصدر هذه الموسوعة تباعاً، وعلى أن تتناول المفكرين التالية أسماؤهم: جمال الدين الأفغاني، رفاعة رافع الطهطاوي، محمد عبده، عبد الرحمن الكواكبي، محمد رشيد رضا، قاسم أمين، أديب إسحق، جرجي زيدان، خير الدين التونسي، علي مبارك، شكيب ارسلان، شبلي الشميل، فرح أنطون، بطرس البستاني، طه حسين.
