الكتاب هو في علوم الحديث جمع فيه المؤلف نكت ظراف ولطائف من دقائق المعارف في علم الحديث، فحوى بذلك بالألم يحوه كتاب آخر من نكت في هذا العلم والتي قد تشتبه على القارئ فيخطئ فيها، لقلة إطلاعه وضحالة علمه، وقد يسر بذلك الكثير على طلاب العلم والدين، وقد قسم الكتاب إلى أجزاء ثمانية، أودع فيها تسعة عشر باباً يشتمل على هذه الدقائق، وقد سردها في مجالس بلغت تسعة وتسعون مجلساً، بدأ فيه بالصحابة رضي الله عنه، ثم التابعين، ثم بعد ذلك العلماء المحدثين الذين اشتهروا بنقل العلم عن بعضهم البعض وذلك في كل باب من أبواب الكتاب.
