إن لهذه الأمة تاريخ مشرف احتوى على أحداث ووقائع جسام، وكان لها في هذا المضمار أعلام نبغوا وبرزوا في كل علم وفن، فكان منهم العالم والمؤرخ والفقيه والإمام. وقد نهض علماء أعلام فسطروا سير هؤلاء الأفذاذ، ودونوا ما كان منها مثالاً يحتذي ونبراساً يقتدي، ليعرف المتأخر للمتقدم فضله، ويسعى أن يكون على دربه ونهجه. وقد اختلف تدوينهم وتشعبت طرقهم فمن جامع لها على طبقات الفقهاء أو المحدثين أو القراء أو النحاة، وغيرهم، إلى مدون لها على ترتيب السنين وتعاقب الوفيات، إلى حاصر لها بأعلام بلد أو حقبة زمنية خاصة.
ومما أفرده مؤرخوا القرون الأخيرة تراجم أعيان كل قرن وعلماءه في مصنفات مفردة. وكان أول الجامعين لتراجم أعيان قرن الإمام الحافظ ابن حجر العسقلاني في مؤلفه "الدرر الكامنة في أعيان المائة الثامنة"، ثم تلاه تلميذه الحافظ شمس الدين السخاوي في كتابه "الضوء اللامع لأهل القرن التاسع"، ثم الشيخ نجم الدين الغزي في كتابه "الكواكب السائرة بأعيان المائة العاشرة، وغير ذلك من المصنفات في أعيان تلك القرون كثير، وغالبها مطبوع متداولة.
أما كتاب العلامة المرادي "سلك الدرر" والذي نحن بصدده فهو مرجع هام في تراجم أعيان وعلماء القرن الثاني عشر الهجري لما حواه من تراجم ناهزت السبعمائة والخمسين ترجمة. وقد سماه مؤلفه باسمين، الأول أخبار الإعصار في أخبار الأمصار، والثاني:سلك الدرر في أعيان القرن الثاني عشر، لكن غلب الاسم الثاني على الكتاب فصار لا يعرف إلا به.
ولا يتميز هذا الكتاب فقد بعدد تراجمه بل ازداد أيضاً بطائفة وافية من أشعار وآثار لهم، مما جعله يتميز عن الكثير من كتب التراجم الأخرى بالإمتاع الأدبي.
