يفتح هذا الكتاب للدارس باب النظر في مسألة التجديد وأسئلته المحرجة التي تواجه الفكر الإسلامي المعاصر في جوانبه المفاهيمية والمسلكية والغائيَّة، ويقف عند الصلة العلمية للخطاب الأصولي كما تأسس في مرحلته الأولى مع "رسالة" الشافعي، وإشكالاته وعوائقه التي عاشها الشاطبي في "الموافقات". ويتحدث عن العناصر المشتركة في الفكر الأصولي عند الشافعي والشاطبي، وثوابت النقد الأصولي ممثلة في: ثابت البعد العملي في الأصول، وثابت البحث المنهجي في الاستدلال، وثابت النظر المقصدي في فقه الخطاب الشرعي.
ويتعقَّب المؤلف بالتحليل والنقد أهم المشاريع العلمية في الخطاب النقدي الأصولي المعاصر، ومدى استفادتها من الخطاب النقدي للشاطبي في سعيها إلى النهضة الحضارية والتجديد عبر تفاعل العقل الإنساني مع الأدلة الشرعية وأسانيدها، والمتغيرات الاجتهادية الخاضعة للتبدُّل، والمصالح الإنسانية المتجددة وفق متطلبات الواقع المعيش، واستصحاب الواقع السياسي والحضاري.
ومن الأسئلة التي يجيب عليها الكتاب: أين تكمن العلاقة بين الخطاب الشرعي والواقع الوجودي والإصلاح المجتمعي الحقيقي؟ كيف نعيد النظر في الخطاب الأصولي؟ كيف نربط بين سؤال النص والواقع لحل الإشكالات؟ وما الأبعاد العملية والمدخل السليم إلى التجديد الأصولي؟
