…لقد اخترنا عمداً أن نستعمل في عنوان هذا الكتاب مفهوم "التحديث" لا التجديد، إيماناً منّا بأنّ المسألة ليست في الدعوة إلى الجديد وتفضيله على القديم وفي الجري وراء التقليعات العابرة، فكم من قديم يتحدّى الزمن بصلاحيته، وكم من جديد معاصر لا فائدة فيه ولا نفع! ذلك أنّ القضية المطروحة بحدّة على الفكر الإسلامي في نظرنا هي مدى استجابته لمقتضيات الحداثة بكل تجلّياتها المادية والمعنوية، العلمية والتقنيّة كما الفكرية والفلسفية، علماً بأنّ هذه الاستجابة ضرورة ملحّة لا ترفاً ذهنيّاً.
...ولا بد من التأكيد على مشروعية تحديث الفكر الإسلامي. ويقيننا أنّ هذا التحديث مسؤولية ملقاة على عاتق المفكّرين المسلمين على اختلاف مشاربهم، وأنه لن ينجح إلا بوعيهم بأنّه عملية لا تحتمل الانتظار، وتتطلب تضافر الجهود وتقارع الآراء في كنف حرية التعبير، بعيداً عن التراشق بالتهم وعن الذهنية الوثوقية الإقصائية.
