تتعرض البيئة إلى تغييرات كبيرة قد تكون في المستقبل مصدراً لأخطار كبيرة تتعرض لها البشرية، وقد أسهم الإنسان دون وعي منه في إفساد البيئة حيث تجاوز الحد الطبيعي في تعامله مع الموارد الطبيعية، فقد صاحب التنمية الاقتصادية المتزايدة تصاعد في النشاط الصناعي والزراعي وهذا قاد إلى استهلاك مفرط ما أدى إلى حدوث إجهاد بيئي كبير وقد أصبحت المخاطر التي تنتج عن انبعاث الغازات والعوادم ماثلة أمام العيان، حيث تلوثت الأنظمة البيئة بمختلف أنواع الفضلات المؤذية والملوثة كيميائياً وفيزيائياً وبيولوجياً وحرارياً.
والكتاب الذي وضعه المهندس خالد عنانزة يعرض لمشكلة النفايات الخطرة ويلقي الضوء على أهم المشاكل المتعلقة بها، الكتاب يقع في ثمانية فصول: الفصل الأول يقدم تعريفاً للنفايات أنواعها وتصنيفها ووصفها، أما الفصل الثاني فيتحدث عن مصادر ومكونات النفايات الخطرة، في حين يتناول الفصل الثالث، الآثار البيئية والصحية للنفايات الخطرة ويشمل ذلك تلوث المياه الجوفية وتلوث الأنهار والبحيرات والمياه السطحية وتلوث الهواء، والحرائق والانفجارات. والتأثير على صحة الإنسان والكائنات الحية الأخرى عن طريق تلوث السلسلة الغذائية أو التسمم عن طريق التعرض المباشر.
ويقدم الفصل الرابع لمحة عامة عن طريق إدارة النفايات الخطرة، وكيفية إعادة استعمال أو استصلاح مادة النفايات الخطرة وكيفية إعادة استعمال أو استصلاح مادة النفايات، ومعالجة أو تحطيم النفايات بواسطة الهدم الفيزيائي، أو إزالة سميتها بفعل عوامل كيميائية، ويتحدث الفصل الخامس عن كيفية معالجة النفايات الخطرة كيميائياً وفيزيائياً وبيولوجياً وحرارياً، أما الفصل السادس فهو يبحث في طرف التخلص النهائي من النفايات، بينما يعرض الفصل السابع لاتفاقية بازل الدولية، أهدافها وبنودها، ويقدم الفصل الثامن بعضاً من للتطبيقات في إدارة النفايات الخطرة.
