بما أن معظم المتغيرات الاقتصادية هي متغيرات كمية تربط فيما بينها علاقات دالية، فقد اصبح استخدام الأسلوب الرياضي ضرورة لا غنى عنها إذا ما أردنا التعبير عن هذه العلاقات بدقة ووضوح. لقد حاولنا في هذا الكتاب معالجة الضعف العام للطلبة في الرياضيات وذلك بالبدء بمراجعة الدوال والعلاقات الخطية والرسم البياني لها بأسلوب سهل للغاية، بحيث يكون امتداداً طبيعياً لمادة الرياضيات في المرحلة الثانوية، وبناءً جديداً لمن لم يدرسوا مادة الرياضيات في الفرع الأدبي في الثانوية العامة. وإذا عكف الطالب على الدراسة الجادة للفصول الربعة من الكتاب والتي تغطي الدوال الخطية والتربيعية والتطبيقات الاقتصادية لهذه الدوال، يمكن الحكم بارتياح أن الطالب سيتمكن من فهم ما تبقى من الفصول بسهولة ويسر.
لقد حرصنا في هذا الكتاب على الإبقاء على المصطلحات والمفاهيم والمتغيرات والرموز الرياضية والاقتصادية كما هي في لغتها الإنجليزية، وتم عرض رديفتها باللغة العربية لتظل متطابقة مع ما جاء في المراجع الأجنبية، ولتكون عوناُ للطالب لفهم محتوى المساقات المتقدمة في هذا العلم، ولقد تم التركيز على عرض أمثلة محلولة ومتعددة لكافة الأفكار الرياضية والاقتصادية بشكل يغطي أغلب الجوانب وبحيث يشعر الطالب أنه يحاور المعلم ويستقي منه المعلومات وطرق الحل وذلك لتشجيعه وصقل قدراته وأبعاد الرهبة من استخدام الأسلوب الرياضي في التحليل الاقتصادي. كما تم وضع العديد من المسائل التطبيقية لكل فصل حتى يتمكن الطالب من حلها بمفرده.
