محمد ماهر حمادة ، مؤرخ ومحقق ووثائقي من سوريا ، عمل أستاذا للتاريخ والحضارة العربية الإسلامية في عدة جامعات عربية وأجنبية ، آخرها جامعة الإمام محمد بن سعود الإسلامية ،حاصل على الدكتوراه في "علم المكتبات" من جامعة ميشيغان في الولايات المتحدة.

لا يختلف اثنان في أهمية المكتبة المدرسية في حسن سير عملية التربية التي تقوم بها المدرسة للناشئة، وأن دور المكتبة المدرسية المنظمة هو دور الموجه والقائد لعلمية التربية بكاملها ولا سيما في سن تكون شخصية الطلاب وثقافاتهم.
هذا وقد اهتم أجدادنا العرب المسلمون بموضوع المكتبات عامة والمكتبات المدرسية خاصة فقد ألحقوا بجميع مدارسهم بدءاً من الكتب وانتهاء بالجامعة والأكادمية مكتبات غنية بموادها منظمة تنظيم بحيث تمكن الطلاب من ارتيادها بسهولة تامة ونهلوا منها حتى استقامت ثقافتهم ونضجت معارفهم مما ساعدهم على أن يبدعوا في التأليف ويغنوا المكتبة العالمية بمؤلفات لا تزال خالدة عبر العصور.
والذي يلفت النظر إن أغلب مكتباتنا عامة والمكتبات المدرسية خاصة هزيلة في محتوياتها كماً وكيفاً وعديمة التنظيم مما يجعل هذه المكتبات هزيلة ضعيفة لا تساعد الطالب على إنجاز أعماله بالشكل المرضى ولا تعينه على أن يثري ثقافته بشكل منظم.
وهذا الكتاب يهتم بسد هذه الثغرة، وهدفه مساعدة أمناء المكتبات في إيجاد تنظيم أفضل لمكتباتهم، حيث يلاق بداية تطور علم المكتبات وأهمية من ثم يتوقف عند موضوعات هامة تتعلق بتنظيم المكتبات، إذ يتحدث عن عملية انتقاء الكتب شراؤها واقتناؤها، وسحبها، من ثم يتحدث عن إعداد الكتب للتداول وترقيمها وتصنيفها، كما ويتحدث عن الفهرسة، وطرق إعادة الكتب والصحف والدوريات، ويعدد أساليب العناية بالكتب وصيانتها وتجليدها، وكيفية تجهيز المكتبات، وأخيراً يورد قائمة بأهم الكتب المقترح اقتناؤها والمتعلقة بموضوعات في الفلسفة والدين علوم الاجتماع وعلوم الطبيعة، والتاريخ والجغرافيا، والتراجم والفنون والموسيقى...
