يراجع الدكتور الجراح وليد شوكت الخيال سيرة حياته منذ طفولته ومرافقته لوالده العقيد الخيال خلال خدمته العسكرية، ودوره في خدمته العسكرية كطبيب ووصوله إلى رتبة لواء طبيب مديراً للخدمات الطبية، وما حصل خلالها من إختصاص في الجراحة ونيل شهادة كلية الجراحين الملكية البريطانية، وخلال مرافقته للمرحوم الملك فيصل الثاني، ولقائه مع حكام العراق بعد تحول العراق إلى جمهورية.
ويشرح الجراح المتميز خبرته في الجراحة بعدما حصل على التدريب في المملكة المتحدة والولايات المتحدة، وحضوره المئات من المؤتمرات العالمية، وإستمراره في كافة الإختصاصات الجراحية، وتقديمه الخدمات للمرضى العراقيين والعرب في مستشفى الخيال الأهلي والذي تم الإعتراف به كمركز عالمي لزرع الكلى من قبل جامعة هايدلبرغ الألمانية عام 1985.
ويذكر أن اللواء الطبيب الجراح وليد الخيال أجرى أول عملية زرع كلية لمرضى الفشل الكلوي عام 1973 في مستشفى الرشيد العسكري والتي سجلت نجاحاً كبيراً في الوطن العربي، وتلا ذلك إستمرار زرع الكلى في مستشفى الخيال للمرضى العراقيين والعرب والذي تجاوز أربعة آلاف عملية.
وهكذا استمر العطاء لخدمة أبناء الوطن رغم ظروف الحصار ثم إحتلال العراق وإنهيار القيم والخدمات.
