سبق أن نال جائزة العمود الصحافي في العام 2008، كما نال جائزة الحملة الإعلامية للمساواة بن الأعراق في العام 2006.
تُرجِم كتابه عن بندقية الكلاشنِكوف إلى العديد من اللغات، واختارته مجلة النيويوركر كأفضل كتاب في أسبوع الكتب.
كما أنه سبق أن نشر كتاباً عن سيرة "كيفن كيغان-المسيح المتردد" في العام 1998، وأُعيد نشره في العام 2007.
اسهم هوجز في سلسلة "ألف كتاب لتغير حياتك" 2008، وسلسلة Flight Free Europe 2007، وله إسهامات عدة في مجلة Time Out البريطانية.
مازال هوجز يكتب مقالاته على نحو منتظم في مجلة Financial Times، Weekend، وNew Statesman، وظهرت تقاريره عن الحرب في العراق والصراع في فلسطين في صحيفة الفايننشال تايمز وعدد من الصحف الأخرى وما يزال يكتب مقالات عن الشرق الأوسط.
Book Description
يتناول الكاتب والصحافي مايكل هوجز في هذا الكتاب رحلة بندقية الكلاشنكوف منذ إختراعها على يد من تسمّت بإسمه، إنها سيرة سلاح تبدأ مع سيرة مخترعه مروراً بالحروب التي شهدت أدواراً عدّة لهذه البندقية الشهيرة، في فيتنام ولبنان وفلسطين وأفغانستان والعراق والسودان وإنتهاءً بحروب العصابات في بوسطن في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية.
كانت رمزاً لحروب التحرير إزاء البنادق الأميركية التي أخفقت في مجاراتها نظراً إلى بساطة بندقية الكلاشنكوف وسهولة إستخدامها وتكيّفها مع الظروف المناخية كافة، ثم غدت سلاحاً يحمله المتخاصمون من الأطياف قاطبةً في الصراعات الأهلية ثم تنتهي رحلة عند حروب العصابات.
"يمكن أن يكون الكلاشنكوف بأيدي جيش دولة ما كما يمكن أن يكون بأيدي معارضيها، أو بحوزة المليشيات أو بأيدي المسلحين أو الأطفال المجندين الأفارقة".
كما مخترع هذه البندقية الجنرال الروسي ميخائيل كَلاشنكوف يسميها "غولم" وهو اسم عفريت الأسطورة الياديشية وقد أقر بأنه سلاح قد أفلت من سيطرة مبتكرة وأصبح قوةً بحدِّ ذاته.
يتتبع الكتاب رحلة ذلك "العفريت" في صراعات داخل بلدان يغدو بها الكلاشنكوف، "مع الأسف، ماضيها ومستقبلها" كما يقول المؤلف.
