الحافظ الإمام أبو بكر عبد الله بن محمد الدنيا البغدادي، أحد حفاظ الحديث وإمام من أئمة الزهد والورع ومؤدب قدير أدب أولاد الخلفاء. وكتاب الصمت وآداب اللسان ذو أهمية بالغة في بابه، وهو ثمرة من ثمار هذا الحافظ المتخصص. يتضمن 759 نصاً جامعاً لكل ما يتعلق بالصمت وآداب اللسان من أحاديث مرفوعة وآثار عن الصحابة والتابعين ويضم بين دفتيه طائفة من النصوص النادرة التي قد لا توجد في كتاب سواه. وللآثار الواردة فيه قيمتان: قيمة شرعية وتربوية، وقيمة علمية.
إضافة إلى ذلك فالكتاب يتضمن صورة عن الواقع الذي كان يعيشه المجتمع الإسلامي في عصر المؤلف وأصل هذا الكتاب نسخ عن المخطوطة اعتمد المحقق منها نسخة دار الكتب المصرية فقرأها قراءة فاحصة ونسخها وقابلها على غيرها من النسخ فذكر الفروق بين النسخ ثم وضع أرقاماً مسلسلة لنصوص الكتاب تسهيلاً لعملية الرجوع إليه. وعدّل كتابة النص بما هو متعارف عليه في عصرنا من الإملاء ونظم النص بما يفيد فهمه فهماً صحيحاً ويعين على إظهار معانيه وضبط الأسانيد وحررها وفي ختام عمله صنع فهارس شاملة لمادة الكتاب وأعلامه.
