يقول المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه بأن جرأة السوسيولوجيا التاريخية تكمن في قدرتها على التساؤل في سياقات التكوين، منظوراً إليها في سياقات خاصة، مبيّنة إلى أية مخاطر، إلى أية استراتيجيات، والى أية عقلانيات كانت هذه السياقات مشدودة ضمن التاريخ الغربي، والجواب عن هذه المسائل هل لجوء المؤلف إلى المنهج المقارن أمراً لازماً، فخصوصية الرهانات التي انبنت على أساسها الحداثة الغربية لا تفهم إلا بإيضاح ما يسميه "تيدا سكوكبول" "المفارقات المأساوية" ويضيف هنا بأنه لا يمكن إدراك بشكل سليم الهوية الاجتماعية-التاريخية للحداثة السياسية المخلوقة في الغرب من أجل الخروج من نظام القرون الوسطى المأزوم إلا بمقارنتها بهوية نظام سياسي آخر، فهي ضمن سياق مختلف وفي مواجهة رهانات مختلفة، ومولد لرؤية وممارسة للسياسي من طبيعة مختلفة، لذا فقد رأى المؤلف أنه من المناسب في دراسته التي يتناولها في هذا الكتاب حول الدولة والمجتمع في الغرب وفي دار الإسلام تأويل السياقات الاجتماعية التي صنعت تاريخ الغرب بدءاً من السياقات نفسها، كما من بناء السياسي الذي كان يتشكل بالتنافس داخل الإمبراطوريات الإسلامية في مرحلة القرون الوسطى.
