نظم مركز دراسات الوحدة العربية والمجمع العلمي العراقي ومعهد البحوث والدراسات العربية التابع للجامعة العربية ندوة بعنوان "اللغة العربية والوعي القومي"، في الفترة الممتدة بين 28-29 أيلول/سبتمبر 1983، في مبنى المجمع العلمي العراقي في بغداد. وقد ألقيت كلمات افتتاحية من قبل كل من د.سعدون حمادي عن مركز دراسات الوحدة العربية، ود.صالح أحمد العلي عن المجمع العلمي العراقي، ود.نوري القيسي عن معهد البحوث والدراسات العربية.
وبعد كلمات الافتتاح عقدت أربع جلسات عمل، ألقيت فيها ملخصات تسعة بحوث وسبعة تعقيبات، وقدم بحث واحد تعقيب مكتوب واحد بدون إلقاء. وقد تم ترتيب البحوث والتعقيبات في هذا الكتاب حسب تسلسل إلقاء ملخصاتها في الجلسات الأربع للندوة. ولا يعكس هذا التسلسل أهمية للبحوث من حيث المحتوى ولا منزلة الكتاب. وبعد إلقاء الملخصات للبحوث والتعقيبات في كل جلسة، جرى نقاش مستفيض من قبل المشاركين، تم بروح علمية وحرية تامة. وقد حضر الندوة ستة وثمانون من المتخصصين من ضمنهم أعضاء المجمع العلمي العراقي وأساتذة اللغة العربية في الجامعات العراقية وعدد من المهتمين بشؤون اللغة العربية والفكر القومي. وقد اختتمت الندوة ببيان ختامي لخصت فيه الاتجاهات الرئيسية التي برزت في البحوث والتعقيبات والمناقشات وعدد من المق4ترحات البناءة. وقد تم تحرير مواد الندوة فتم ضبط نصوص البحوث والتعقيبات، كما تم تفريغ المناقشات وتحريرها وجمعت مع الوثائق الأخرى، في هذا الكتاب الذي بين يدينا والذي يهدف إلى إلقاء الضوء على قضية علاقة اللغة العربية بالوعي القومي العربي.
