لا يخفى على ذي بصيرة مكانة الفقه في الشريعة الإسلامية، إذ يمثل إحدى الركيزتين الأساسيتين اللتين يقوم عليهما هذا الدين، وهما "الإعتقاد والعمل".
والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا هو إحدى المراجع المعتمدة لدى المسلمين في المذهب الشافعي، الذي يعتبر أحد المذاهب الأربعة المعتمدة عندهم، وهي الحنفي نسبة إلى أبي حنيفة النعمان [بن] ثابت، والمالكي نسبة إلى مالك بن أنس، والحنبلي نسبة إلى أحمد بن حنبل، ورابعها الشافعي نسبة إلى محمد بن إدريس الشافعي، وتتميز هذه المذاهب عن بعضها بأن لكل طريقته ومنهجيته وأصوله في إستنباط الأحكام من القرآن والسُّنّة.
ولقد ألف الشافعي كتباً كثيرة، بعضها كتبه بنفسه وقرأه على الناس وبعضها أملاه إملاءً، وقد جمعت في كتاب سمي كتاب "الأم" جمعها الربيع بن سليمان المؤذن بمصر وسماها بهذا الإسم، بعد أن سمع منه هذه الكتب، وما فاته سماعه بين ذلك، وما وجده الشافعي ولم يسمعه بينه أيضاً (كما بين من قراءة الكتاب)، وقال صاحب كشف الطنون: كتاب الأم للشافعي، جمعه البويطي ولم يذكر اسمه، وقد نسب إلى ربيع بن سليمان.
وتمتاز هذه النسخة عن غيرها بترقيمها، وتوزيع فقراتها، وتوضيح الكتب والأبواب فيها وتخريجها، والعناية بنصّها، وفهرسة موضوعاتها حسب ورودها في الكتاب وعلى حروف الهجاء، وفهرسة الحديث والآثار.
