إن الحقائق المتعلقة بأهمية النمو في مرحلة الطفولة لم تتضح - في الواقع - إلاّ منذ فترة قريبة جداً في تاريخ الحضارة الإنسانية، فإذا تتبعنا نشأة العلوم وتطورها، نجد أن العلوم الطبيعية كانت قد نشأت واستقرت كجزء من التراث الثقافي للإنسان، قبل أن تبدأ أبسط الدراسات العلمية للسلوك البشري.
وليس معنى ذلك أن الإنسان لم يفكر أو يتأمل في طبيعته البشرية إلاّ مؤخراً فقط، فقد نشأت تأملات وفلسفات وأنواع أخرى من التفكير، في أهمية خبرات الطفولة وأثرها في تفكير الكبير، وفي سلوكه الإجتماعي، لكن الذي نريد أن نؤكده هنا، هو أن ثمة دراسات علمية، بالمعنى الصحيح لهذه الكلمة، لم تنشأ قبل بداية القرن العشرين.
قسم الكتاب إلى جزئين رئيسين؛ ولا يقتصر إنتشار هذه الأفكار الخاطئة على مستوى العامة، فحسب، بل تجده شائعاً أيضاً عند صفوة من المثقفين، فلا يزال بيننا حتى الآن من المفكرين والمشتغلين بالفلسفة وبالعلوم الإنسانية من يعتقد بجزم أن السلوك الإنساني سلوك فردي؛ بمعنى أن كل فرد فريد من ذاته وليس شبيهاً بأي فرد آخر وعلى ذلك فليس هناك مجال لإستخلاص قوانين أو مبادئ عامة للسلوك.
وبالتالي، لا يمكن التنبؤ بما يصدر عن الفرد سواء في حاضره أم في مستقبله، كما يوجد من يقول: إنه، حتى إذا كان هناك نظام سببي تخضع له الظاهرة السلوكية، فإن هذا النظام هو في الواقع من التعقيد بحيث يستحيل إكتشافه أو وصفه أو تحديده أو من يقرر أن مبدأ السببية في السلوك الإنساني يتعارض أصلاً مع حرية الإنسان ومسؤولية الأخلاقية، ولذلك فلا نستطيع أن نسلم، بإمكانية قيام علم للسلوك.
