لمّا كان الحديث وحفظه من أقرب الوسائل إلى الله عزّ وجل بمقتضى الآثار في ذلكن ولما كانت الهمم قد قصرت عن حفظها مع كثرة كتبها من أجل أسانيدها، عمد صاحب هذا المختصر الإمام ابن أبي جمرة الشرنوبي إلى جمع تلك الأحاديث في هذا المؤلف من أصحها كتاباً وهو مختصر البخاري مختصراً منه الأحاديث بحسب الحاجة إليه، مختصراً أسانيدها ما عدا راوي الحديث الذي لا بد من ذكره، وذلك تسهيلاً لحفظها، وبلغ مجموع تلك الأحاديث في هذا المختصر حوالي الثلاثمائة حديث، تمّ جمعها دون التفريق بينها بتبويب. وكان أولها "كيف كان بدء الوحي لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم" وآخرها "دخول أهل الجنة وأنعام الله عليهم بدوام رضاه فيها". واسماً الكتاب بمقتضى وضعه (جمع النهاية في بدء الخير وغاية).
والإمام الشرنوبي هو أبو محمد، عبد الله بن سعد بن سعيد بن أبي جمرة الأزدي، الأندلسي، المالكي، الولي القدوة، العارف بالله، الزاهد الصالح، الإمام العلامة، القارئ المشهور من العلماء بالحديث، له كرامات عديدة مجموعة في كراريس مع أخباره عن أكابر أصحاب القلوب. وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن كتابه هذا تضحى في هامشه شرح العلامة عبد المجيد الشرنوبي والذي عمد فيه إلى ضبط ألفاظ هذا المختصر وذلك صيانة من اللحن في الحديث الشريف كما أنه عمد أيضاً إلى شرحه زيادة في الفائدة معتمداً النسخة التي كتب عليها غالب الشراح، منبهاً ما عداها من النسخ التي تفرد بها البعض ولم تكن على قدر من الدقة.
وصاحب شرح هذا المختصر هو عبد المجيد الشرنوبي الأزهري، المالكي، عالم مشارك في: الفقه، الحديث، التصوف، اللغة، النحو وغيرها. ولد في بلدة شرنوب التابعة لمركز دمنهور بمديرية الجيزة بمصر، التحق بالأزهر، وعين بدار الكتب الأزهرية، وفي سنة 1321هـ كان مشغولاً بالتدريس ونشر الكتب في جامع الأزهر بمصر. له عدة مؤلفات في الفقه والحديث والمواعظ والنحو والتصوف.
