مصنف هذا الكتاب هو إمام فاق أقرانه، ونابغة أريب لا يباري في حسن صناعته، ولا يجاري في فصيح عبارته، بفضله سارت الركبان في سائر الأقطار وشهدت بعلو مكانته مخول العلماء في جميع الإعصار، شيخ النحاة أبو بشر عمر بن عثمان بن قنبر، مولى بن الحارث بن كعب الملقب بسيبويه. ولد بالبيضاء قرية من قرى شيراز (فارس) من عام ثمانية وأربعين بعد المائة من الهجرة.
قدم البصرة وهو طفل صغير مع والديه ونشأ بها، ولزم حلقة حماد بن سلمة فبينا هو يستملي على حماد بعض أحاديث الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم إذ لحّنه حماد، فقال سوف أطلب علماً لا يلحنني فيه أحد. طلب أولاً علوم الدين، ثم انصرف إلى علوم الأدب، وغلب عليه النحو حتى صار الإمام الأعظم، وصحب الفقهاء، وأهل الحديث، وأخذ اللغة عن أبي الخطاب المعروف بالأخفش الأكبر وغيره، وأخذ عنه الأخفش الصغير، وقطرب، وجماعة.
حفظ سيبويه القرآن، وكان محباً للكتب، مقبلاً على العلم إقبالاً شديداً، حتى لا يكاد يفضل لديه شيء أو يشغله عنه شيء، ويروي أنه كانت عنده جارية، وكانت تحبه، فلما رأت إعراضه عنها، وانصرافه إلى كتابه ترصدت له حتى خرج لبعض شأنه فأخذت جذوة نار، وطرحتها في الكتب حتى احترقت، فلما رجع سيبويه ورأى كتبه وقد صارت هباءً غشي عليه أسفاً ثم أفاق فأطلقها.
وكتابه الذي بين يدينا صنفه في النحو، وهو لم يصنف مثله ولا قبله ولا بعده، والكتاب كما ستراه ليس له مقدمة ولا خاتمة، وكان على نية العودة إليه، لأنه كان لديه منه بقية، ولا يزال في نفسه شيء، ويؤيد ذلك أنه ما سماه، وما قرأه على أحد، ولم يقرأه عليه أحد، وأن يونس وهو من شيوخه لم يعلم نبأ الكتاب ولا بعد وفاته، واتفق العلماء بعد وفاته أن يسمّوا هذه الأوراق بالكتاب فقط، ولا يصفونه بصفة، ولا يخصصونه بإضافة، ورضي البعض منهم هذه التسمية، ووافقوا عليها.
وصار (الكتاب) علماً لكتاب سيبويه، فكان يقال قرأ فلان الكتاب فيعلم أنه كتاب سيبويه، وقرا نصف الكتاب فلا يشك أنه كتاب سيبويه، وكان هذا الكتاب يهدى إلى الملوك والوزراء كأحسن هدية في عهد العباسيين.
