هذا كتاب أورد فيه المؤلف الرواة الذين تكلم عنهم على حسب المدن التي كانوا فيها، فابتدأ بالكوفة التي ابتليت بالخوارج والرافضة والمرجئة، ثم البصرة التي ابتليت بالقدرية، ثم المدينة والشام وأهل مكة، وفي خلال الكتاب يتعرض للفرق الضالة من خوارج وسبأية وغيرها، وقد اعتمد العلماء والنقاد الذين كتبوا في الرجال لمن جاؤوا بعده، وأورد أقواله وجعلوها من مصادرهم. وبالنظر لأهمية هذا الكتاب فقد اعتنى بتحقيقه حيث اهتم أولاً: بعزو النصوص التي اقتبست من الجوزجاني إلى أماكنها من الكتب التي اعتمدته، ثانياً: ذكر ما ورد في الراوي من جرح وتعديل من المصادر الأخرى من كتب الرجال. ثالثاً: أورد زيادة شرح للفرق الضالة والنحل الفاسدة. رابعاً: ترجم للأعلام الواردة في الكتاب. خامساً: وضع فهرساً للرواة، ورتبه على نسق حروف المعجم. سادساً: ضبط الرواة من كتب الأنساب والكتب المؤتلف والمختلف في الأسماء.
