اللعب نشاط يجري لذاته بقصد المتعة، فيندفع الطفل إلى القيام به عبر طائفة من الحركات الجسمية والنفسية، لذا فإن نشاط الطفل الإنساني يتميز بأنه نشاط لعبي، إذ يمر الطفل في نموه بخبرات يصعب عليقه هضمها، فيخلق في لعبه مواقف نموذجية بسيطة يتغلب بواسطتها على الواقع.
يعد اللعب من أهم العوامل التي تمنحها البيئة للطفل كي يحقق عامل النضج والنمو، فهو عامل جدي وظيفته مهمة لتحقيق ظروف ملائمة لإكتساب خبرات ومهارات متعددة حيث يكتسب الطفل المعرفة ويختار السلوك الإجتماعي الملائم.
ويشكل اللعب حاجة من حاجات الطفل المهمة لنموه الجسمي والعقلي والإجتماعي ويمكن بواسطته أن يكتسب بعض مظاهر السلوك فتنمو شخصيته ويتعلم قواعد السلوك الإجتماعي السليم بما يستخدمه من ألفاظ وعبارات ولأهمية اللعب فإن علينا أن نهيئ بيئة تتوافر فيها فرص لممارسة جميع أنواع النشاط، وترى كاثرين هارفي في أي نشاط لا يكون لعباً ما لم يحقق أموراً عدة منها: "أن يجلب المتعة للأطفال"، "أن يكون غاية وليس وسيلة لهدف ما"، "أن يختاره اللاعبون بأنفسهم"، "أن يتضمن مشاركة من جانب اللاعب، وعليه فالفرد يشعر بالمتعة بعد ان ينتهي من اللعب فهو إذن حالة بديلة بين الشد الذي يسبقه والإنتعاش الذي يليه".
