من البديهي أن معرفة سند الحديث تعتبر من أ÷م وأوسع سبل الوصول إلى معرفة اعتبار الحديث والتعديل عليه، وغالباً ما تتيسر هذه المعرفة عن طريق المصادر التاريخية التي تتناول موضوع الرواة ورجال الحديث. وفي ميدان علم الرجال تؤخذ تصريحات المشايخ المتقدمين في الجرح والتعديل كواحدة من ملاكات معرفة الراوي. ومن جملة أعلام علم الرجال في القرنين الرابع والخامس للهجرة، الحسين بن عبد الله الفضائري، وابنه أحمد بن الحسين الفضائري، الذي ترجم له النجاشي في "فهرست مصنفي الشيعة" وقد حظي كتاب ابن الفضائري "الرجال" بأهمية فائقة بين الكتب الرجالية المهمة في ذلك العصر؛ أي كتب رجال الكشي، والبرقي، والنجاشي، ورجال وفهرست الشيخ الطوسي، فقد وضع تقييمه للرواة في هذا الكتاب على أسس خاصة به في الجرح والتعديل.
بيد أن مرور الأيام وتعاقب الدهور حال دون وصول هذا الكتاب إلى أيدي علماء رجال القرون المتأخرة، ولم تبق منه إلا فصولاً وردت في مجمع الرجال لعناية الله القهبائي، وقد حظيت هذه الفصول باهتمام العلماء الذين جاؤوا من بعده. ولأهمية كتاب "الرمال" للفضائري جرى استلال نصه ومستدركاته المستقاة من مختلف نصوص كتب الرجال، ومن ثم إحياء الكتاب من خلال عملية التحقيق التي جرت بأسلوب علمي متقن. كما ومن خلال تلك المقدمة التي احتوت على تعريف بالمؤلف والكتاب، وبالمنهج الذي سار عليه.
