الحديث عن شخصية الإمام علي عليه السلام ليس بالأمر الذي يسهل الخوض فيه، إذ يتطلب ذلك قدرة على فهم جوانب شخصيته المتعددة وإلماماً بمكنونات عظمته الباهرة، فشخصيته قد حوت الجلال والجمال وارتقت رقياً تصعب مجاراته فكيف بمن رام أن يظهر فضائل الإمام بكلمات قد لا تبنى إلا عن أقل القليل من فضائله وعظمته فهو بحق ظاهرة وجودية مذهلة.
ورغم صعوبة المهمة فقد انطلق مؤلف هذا الكتاب ليضع جهد السنين في موسوعة الإمام علي بن أبي طالب في الكتاب والسنة والتاريخ. وهي إطلالة على حياة أمير المؤمنين توفرت على بيان أجزاء من حياته وسيرته العطرة.
تقع الموسوعة في قسمين، يعرض الفصل الأول من القسم الأول لأسرة التي تشأ فيها وبيان المحيط الذي تربى فيه، وشخصية أبويه وعن أسمائه وألقابه وكناه وشمائله وأوصافه وزواجه وزوجاته وأولاده. أما الفصل الثاني فهو يعرض لنشأة أمير المؤمنين، وبينما يتناول الفصل الثالث تزويجه فاطمة بنت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وزوجاته بعد فاطمة.
أما القسم الثاني فهو يتألف من ثلاثة عشر فصلاً، الفصل الأول يتحدث عن المؤازرة على الدعوة ثم يعرض الفصل الثاني لصعود علي على منكبي النبي لكسر الأصنام. ويتناول الفصل الثالث مبيت علي في فراش النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ليلى الهجرة. وفي الفصل الرابع يتحدث المؤلف عن مواقف لغير المؤمنين في غزوتي بدر وأحد، كما يتناول الفصل الخامس إرغام العدو على التسليم في غزوتي بني النضير وبني قريطة.
في حين يعرض الفصل السادس للضربة المصيرية في غزوة الخندق ويتحدث الفصل السابع لشجاعته وأدبه في الحديبية، كما يتناول الدورة المصيري الذي قام به في الفصل الثامن، وخصص الفصل التاسع لنشاطاته في فتح مكة، وبحث في الفصل العاشر إقامته الرائعة، في غزوة حنين.
كما بحث في الفصل الحادي عشر الاستخلاف عن النبي في غزوة بتول، وجاء الفصل الثاني عشر للحديث عن البعثات الهامة التي قام بها، في حين خصص الفصل الثالث عشر لأدعية النبي للإمام، بينما عالج الفصل الرابع عشر موضوع العروج من صدر الوصي.
