يحظى كل من الحكمة والعلم بمكانة متميزة في الإسلام، وواجب معرفة العلم الذي قصده الإسلام وأوصى بتعلمه يحتم علينا أن نبحث فيما إذا كان المقصود فرعاً من فروع العلم بعينه أم المقصود به مطلق العلم. إن العلم من وجهة نظر الإسلام له حقيقة وجوهر وظاهر وقشور فحقيقته هي نور يرى به الإنسان العالم كما هو ويجد موقعه في الوجود بسببه. أما القشور فهي ضروب العلوم الرسمية الإسلامية وغير الإسلامية. وعندما يفقد العلم حقيقته أو جوهره، فلا يساوي الجهل فحسب، بل يكون أكثر ضرراً منه، إذ يقود نمو السقوط والانحطاط.
والخطر الذي يحدق بالأمة يأتي من حقيقة أن العلم قد أخذ يفقد حقيقته وجوهره وخاصيته والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يقدم تعريفاً لموقف الإسلام من العلم والحكمة ما يساهم في بلورة موقف صحيح يقود إلى تذليل الصعاب أمام محاولات بناء المجتمع الإنساني وحفظه من الانحرافات والضلال.
وقد تميز الكتاب بأنه يعرض لذلك من خلال مجموعة من النصوص الإسلامية المستقلة، على العكس من الكثير من الكتب التي تناولت الموضوع لكنها أهملت هذا الجانب والكتاب إضافة إلى ذلك يمثل جانباً هاماً من موسوعة ميزان الحكمة وسيتلوه كتاب آخر يشكل إضافة للموضوع ذاته.
