يضم هذا العمل العلمي أكبر قدر من المعلومات المبسطة التي ت شرح علاقة "الأثر" بما حوله من عوامل وقوى التلف المختلفة، وما ينشأ عن هذه العلاقة من تفاعلات فيزيائية وكيميائية ينتج عنها في النهاية مظاهر تلف متعددة ظاهره أو باطنه لفي مادة الأثر. ثم انتقل بعد ذلك، إلى شرح أهم أساليب العلاج والصيانة التي يستخدمها المرممون في سبيل تخلص الأثر من مظاهر التلف المختلفة، مستعيناً في ذلك بالوسائل الميكانيكية والمواد الكيمائية المختلفة التي تعيد للأثر قوته الميكانيكية التي فقدها نتيجة تعرضه باستمرار لهجوم عوامل التلف المختلفة.
إن كثيراً من المفاهيم العلمية التي سجلها الدكتور جعفر فضل الله في هذا الكتاب، قام بتطبيقها في الحفريات التي شارك فيها في لبنان وخارجه، والبعض الآخر من تلك المفاهيم، استقلها من الأعمال العلمية التي كتبها علماء ترميم وصيانة الآثار أمثال H.BERT و H.PLENDERLEITH.
هذا الكتاب محاولة لإضافة جديد إلى المكتبة العربية، يتناول موضوع صيانة وترميم المقتنيات الفنية والموروثة عن الآباء والأجداد، وحاجة ضرورية بين يدي أساتذة وطلاب علم الآثار والعاملين في هذا المضمار كعمل علمي باللغة العربية يتناول مراحل تطور علم ترميم وصيانة الآثار عبر عصور التاريخ المختلفة، وطرق تطبيقه بناءً على أحدث ما توصل إليه علماء الصيانة والترميم والكيمياء في معالجة وصيانة الآثار.
هذا الكتاب مشروع إجابة عن أسئلة كثيرة، تهدف إلى حماية التراث الإنساني من أسباب التلف أطول فترة ممكنة، كي تظل دوماً الوثائق المادية –التي لا يتطرق أدمة شك إلى ما تمثله من قيم تاريخية وأثرية وفنية وجمالية- مؤشراً على ما حققه الأجداد في مجالات العمارة والفنون والعلوم المختلفة، وحافزاً معنوياً للأجيال القادمة على مواصلة التطور والتقدم في مضمار النبوغ الحضاري.
